If I feel like the flash is outputting at 1/2 power, and it’s using too much of my batteries, I’ll adjust my ISO up one stop or 2 stops, and I’ll adjust down to 1/4 or 1/8 power. I can make that adjustment very simply, and I know exactly how much power I’m using. I can just adjust from 1/4 power to 1/2 power or 1/4 plus 2/3 exposure value, whatever I want to do. Let’s just say I’m at 1/4 power, and I step back.
#Zoom flash manual
That’s again one of the reasons why we say to use manual because if I’m at 1/4 power, and I take 10 steps back, and I was 20 feet … Let’s not even work distance into this. That’s a very simple way to understand how much flash power I’m getting. Some only go to 1/16, but it’s basically just telling you that this is a fraction of the total output that it can provide. Some flashes will allow you to adjust down to 1/64. One half is half of the flash power, 1/4 is a quarter of the flash power, 1/8 and 1/16, 1/32, 1/64, all the way down to whatever. In manual mode it simply gives me a fraction basically of total flash output, 1/1 means 100%. Again, not used frequently, but we will talk about it a little bit more later on. Multi is that hertz mode that we were talking about where you can get multiple fires off in whatever shutter duration or whatever speed you want. When we switch over to manual mode, and you can get to manual mode … On this flash right here I can just hit mode, and it’s going to take me into manual or multi. I just know that it’s going to be an automated exposure plus one EV, that’s it. Again, not a very precise method of adjusting the power and the flash because I don’t know exactly how much power is coming out.

All I would do is hit set and then simply hit plus or down.

If we wanted to make an adjustment, I’m on E-TTL right now. Now over here, this is the back screen of the Phottix Mitros Plus right here.
